Regularly replacing diesel filters is the most cost-effective, basic, and important maintenance project for diesel equipment. According to data from the commercial vehicle maintenance industry, over 67% of diesel engine fuel system failures are directly related to filter element expiration and filtration failure. Many users rely solely on mileage to determine replacement time, ignoring key factors such as operating conditions, fuel quality, environment, and idle status, resulting in inadequate or excessive maintenance and accelerating equipment wear and tear. Based on industry standards and practical experience, a scientific replacement cycle plan that is suitable for all scenarios can be developed.

The standard operating conditions are suitable for household diesel SUVs, light trucks, and urban commuting vehicles. These devices operate on smooth roads with low dust emissions, and are regularly fueled with genuine diesel fuel that meets the national standards of PetroChina and Sinopec. The impurities and moisture content of the fuel are extremely low. Under this operating condition, the standard replacement cycle for diesel coarse filters (oil-water separators) is 15000-20000 kilometers or 6 months, whichever comes first in terms of mileage or time; The standard replacement cycle for diesel fine filters is 25000 to 30000 kilometers or 12 months. The dual filter element is replaced synchronously and on schedule, which can maximize the filtration accuracy, maintain the optimal working state of the engine, and avoid hidden losses under normal operating conditions.
The harsh and harsh working conditions require a significant reduction in the replacement cycle, which is the most easily overlooked maintenance focus for most users. In scenarios such as mining, earthwork construction, slag transportation, agricultural operations, and driving on gravel roads, the environmental dust concentration is extremely high, and the fuel tank ventilation system is prone to inhaling a large amount of impurities. At the same time, the storage conditions for oil products in the field are poor, and diesel is easily mixed with sediment, moisture, and gum. The filter load doubles and the loss rate accelerates significantly. In such working conditions, the coarse filter needs to be shortened to 5000-8000 kilometers or replaced within 3 months, and the fine filter needs to be shortened to 12000 to 15000 kilometers for replacement. In addition, equipment that operates at idle for long periods of time, short distance driving, and in high-altitude and high-temperature areas, with insufficient fuel combustion and easy deterioration of oil products, also needs to shorten the replacement cycle by more than 30%.
Idle and static working conditions should follow the principle of "time first" to break the mileage maintenance misconception. Many construction machinery, agricultural machinery, and backup diesel generators are idle and parked for a long time, with extremely low driving and operating mileage throughout the year. However, the filter element and filter material are exposed to deteriorated fuel, moisture and oxidation for a long time, which can cause problems such as hardening, brittleness, blockage and failure. Industry standards clearly stipulate that regardless of the mileage, the filter element must be forcibly replaced after continuous use for 12 months; If the equipment has been idle for more than 6 months, it must be replaced with a new filter element before being put back into use to prevent the aging filter element from damaging the engine.
High quality oil products and high-end filter cartridges can be moderately adjusted in cycle, but cannot be indefinitely delayed. Long term refueling of genuine national standard diesel and use of high-quality original filter cartridges can extend the mileage by 20% on the basis of the standard cycle, but the maximum mileage should not exceed 40000 kilometers. Otherwise, the filter cartridge will become saturated with pollutants and the pores will be completely blocked, resulting in a complete loss of filtration capacity. Strictly following the replacement cycle adapted to the working conditions, preventing overdue use, can reduce fuel system failures from the root, significantly reduce equipment maintenance costs, and extend engine service life.
