【Meiruier Filter】What does an air filter do

2023-06-26 View:

The engine needs to absorb a large amount of air during operation. If the air is not filtered and the suspended dust in the air is sucked into the cylinder, it will accelerate the wear of the piston group and cylinder. Large particles entering between the piston and cylinder can cause serious cylinder pulling, especially in dry and sandy working environments. The air filter is installed in front of the carburetor or intake pipe to filter out dust and sand particles in the air, ensuring that sufficient and clean air enters the cylinder. Among the millions of components in a car, the air filter is a very inconspicuous component because it is not directly related to the technical performance of the car. However, in the actual use of the car, the air filter has a great impact on the service life of the car (especially the engine).

On the one hand, without the filtering effect of the air filter, the engine will inhale a large amount of air containing dust and particles, leading to severe wear and tear of the engine cylinders; On the other hand, if maintenance is not carried out for a long time during use, the filter element of the air filter will become full of dust in the air, which not only reduces the filtering ability but also hinders the flow of air, resulting in a rich mixture and abnormal engine operation. Therefore, regular maintenance of the air filter is crucial. There are generally two types of air filters: paper and oil bath.

In recent years, paper filters have been widely adopted due to their advantages such as high filtration efficiency, light weight, low cost, and easy maintenance. The filtration efficiency of paper filter cartridges is over 99.5%, while the filtration efficiency of oil bath filters is 95-96% under normal conditions. At present, the widely used air filters on cars are paper filters, which are divided into dry and wet types. For dry filter elements, once immersed in oil or water, the filtration resistance will sharply increase. Therefore, it is important to avoid contact with water or oil during cleaning, otherwise a new component must be replaced. When the engine is running, the intake air is intermittent, causing air vibration inside the air filter housing. If the air pressure fluctuates too much, it can sometimes affect the engine's intake air.

In addition, this will also increase the intake noise. In order to suppress intake noise, the volume of the air filter housing can be increased, and some even have partitions arranged in it to reduce resonance. The filter elements of air filters are divided into two types: dry filter elements and wet filter elements. The dry filter element material is filter paper or non-woven fabric. In order to increase the air passage area, most filter elements are processed into many small wrinkles. When the filter element is slightly damaged, compressed air can be used to blow it clean. When the filter element is severely damaged, a new core should be replaced in a timely manner. The wet filter element is made of sponge like polyurethane material. When installing, some engine oil should be added dropwise and kneaded evenly by hand to absorb foreign objects in the air. If the filter element is dirty, it can be cleaned with cleaning oil, and if it is excessively dirty, it should be replaced with a new filter element. If the filter element is severely blocked, it will increase intake resistance and decrease engine power. At the same time, due to the increase in air resistance, it will also increase the amount of gasoline sucked in, resulting in a rich mixture ratio, which can worsen the engine's operating state, increase fuel consumption, and easily cause carbon deposition. You should develop the habit of regularly checking the air filter element in daily life.
