According to the way impurities are removed, air filters can be divided into three categories: inertial type: large particles are removed due to the large inertia of dust particles when the airflow rapidly changes the flow direction.

Oil bath type: Before the air enters the filter element, it flows over the oil surface at the turning point of the air flow. Large particles are thrown out due to inertia, and the dust is stuck by the oil.

Filtration type: It uses air flow to pass through the micropore of the filter element or narrow and tortuous filter element channel to cause multiple collisions, so that the dust is blocked or adhered to the filter element. This is a main filtering method, which is most effective for removing fine dust.

The air filter used in modern engines combines the above three filtering methods to form a comprehensive air filter.
