【Meiruier Filter】The hazards of inferior air filters

2026-07-15 View:

There is a huge price difference in the air filter market. The inferior secondary factory filter element priced at tens of yuan has a highly similar appearance to the original genuine filter element, but the filter material material, filtration accuracy, intake resistance, dust holding capacity, and structural process are vastly different. Many car owners blindly choose low-priced and inferior filter elements to reduce maintenance costs. In the short term, there are no obvious symptoms of failure, but long-term use can cause sustained and irreversible chronic wear and tear to the engine. The later maintenance costs far exceed the price difference of the filter element. Recognizing the hazards of inferior filter cartridges and mastering practical identification skills for ordinary people are essential abilities for basic vehicle maintenance.

The core defects of poor quality air filters are concentrated in three dimensions: filter material, process, and structure, and the performance is not up to standard comprehensively. Firstly, the filter material is of poor quality, using low-density recycled paper, miscellaneous fibers, and thin non-woven fabric. The pore size is uneven and the density is disorderly, resulting in extremely low filtration accuracy and inability to intercept fine sand and dust particles. A large amount of harmful impurities can directly penetrate the filter material and enter the engine. Secondly, the intake resistance is out of control, with low-quality filter cartridges having fewer folding layers, insufficient filtering area, and clogged pores. The intake resistance far exceeds industry standards, resulting in insufficient engine intake and imbalanced air-fuel ratio. Finally, the structural process is poor. The sealing ring uses recycled hard rubber, which has poor sealing performance and is prone to air leakage. The shell support is insufficient, and it is prone to deformation and collapse during high-speed air intake, completely losing its filtering and protective function.

The hazards of long-term use of inferior filter cartridges are hidden and highly destructive, belonging to the category of "chronic destruction". Filter failure leads to the continuous entry of fine hard particles into the cylinder, causing wear on precision components such as pistons, cylinder walls, valves, and fuel injectors. Over time, this results in increased cylinder clearance, decreased sealing, and chronic diseases such as oil burning, power attenuation, weak acceleration, and idle shaking. Excessive intake resistance leads to insufficient intake and fuel combustion, resulting in a large accumulation of carbon deposits, which further leads to soaring fuel consumption, excessive exhaust emissions, and blockage of the three-way catalytic converter. In severe cases, impurities can enter the turbine and throttle, causing turbine wear and throttle sticking, leading to major maintenance failures and significantly shortening the engine's service life.

Six practical skills can quickly and accurately distinguish genuine and inferior filter cartridges, with zero threshold and high accuracy.
At first glance at the appearance and craftsmanship, genuine filter cartridges are neatly folded, evenly spaced, with regular edges, clear printing, and complete batch information; Poor quality filter cartridges have messy folding, rough edges, blurry fonts, and no formal qualification information.
Secondly, look at the texture of the filter material. Genuine filter materials are thick, uniform, strong in toughness, not easy to tear, do not shed powder, and are moisture-proof and resistant to oil stains; Poor quality filter materials are light, thin, loose, easily damaged, have severe powder loss, and solidify when exposed to water.
Thirdly, look at the sealing gasket. Genuine gaskets are soft, elastic, tightly fitted, odorless, and not easily aged; Poor quality rubber rings are stiff, dry, prone to cracking, have a strong odor, and have poor sealing performance.
Fourth, look at the overall weight. Genuine products are made of solid materials, have a dense structure, and meet weight standards; Poor quality filter cartridges cut corners and are generally lightweight.
The fifth aspect is transparency. Genuine filter materials have uniform transparency and fine pores; Poor quality filter materials have mottled transparency and varying pore sizes.
Sixth, check the anti-counterfeiting qualifications. Legitimate brands come with exclusive anti-counterfeiting codes that can be verified on their official websites, while inferior products lack anti-counterfeiting and have incomplete qualifications.

The air filter is the first safety barrier of the engine, not a small consumable that can reduce costs. Poor quality filter cartridges may seem to save money, but in reality, they continue to damage the engine and bury potential faults, which is not worth the loss. Daily maintenance must resolutely abandon low-priced and inferior parts, choose compliant and genuine filter cartridges, block impurities and wear from the source, maximize the protection of engine stability, and reduce long-term use and maintenance costs.
